Minister Oboth-Oboth Hails UK Support In Strengthening UPDF Capabilities
The Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, has lauded the historical bilateral relationship between Uganda and the United Kingdom, emphasising its importance in the areas of defence and military cooperation.
Hon. Oboth-Oboth made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Lisa Chesney, at the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya.
He highlighted the significant impact of this collaboration on enhancing the operational capabilities of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), stating, “We have made great strides in our efforts to improve our army due to the strong support from the British government.”
H.E. Chesney, in turn, commended the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for their vital contributions to regional stability, particularly through their role in AMISOM-ATMIS operations.
Reflecting on her tenure as Deputy Ambassador in Somalia, she stated, “When we reopened the British embassy in Somalia, I was able to do so thanks to your troops. I was greatly impressed with the UPDF.”
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Undersecretary for Finance and Administration, Ms. Edith Buturo; the Chief of Joint Staff, Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba; Director of Defence Public Information, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye; and Director of Legal Affairs, Brig Gen Aloysius Kagoro. Col Peter Ajoket, Military Assistant to the Minister, was also present.
