Security Agencies Commended For Peace Restoration In Karamoja
The State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Hon Florence Wamala Nambozo, has commended the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and other security agencies for their pivotal role in restoring peace to the Karamoja region.
During a visit to the Moroto district headquarters today, Minister Nambozo celebrated the newfound security in the area, stating, “You can now drive all over the Karamoja sub-region at any time because of the peace that you have brought.”
Speaking to journalists and local leaders, the Minister encouraged the community to embrace this period of stability by engaging in productive activities that will drive socio-economic progress. She also underscored the importance of education, urging parents to ensure their children attend school, securing a brighter future for the next generation. Religious and cultural leaders were called upon to support positive change within the community.
Maj Gen Don William Nabasa, Commander of the 3 Infantry Division, also provided a positive assessment of the security situation. Since the launch of Operation ‘Usalama Kwa Wote’ in July 2021, the region has seen a dramatic improvement in stability. The operation has resulted in the recovery of 1,170 firearms, 9,217 rounds of ammunition, 53,253 livestock, and the confiscation of 14,080 litres of illegal waragi.
Maj Gen Nabasa expressed his satisfaction with the growing trust between the security forces and the local population, noting that the community recognises the dedication of the forces to maintaining peace.
Mr Tuko Justin Sam, Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Moroto, praised government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, which have raised the local standard of living. He also applauded the infrastructure development projects, including roads, markets, and schools.
During the visit, leaders and journalists toured several sites, including UPDF training and demonstrations, the Sunbelt Mining Group, the NARO Nabun Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute, and conducted nighttime security patrols in urban centres.
Also present were Deputy Commander 3rd Infantry Division Brig Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Director of Defence Public Information Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, Moroto Regional Police Commander SSP Madri Ahmed, Anti-Stock Theft Unit Commandant ACP Francis Chemusto, and Moroto District LCV Chairperson Mr David Koryang, among others.
